Important temples of Durga are filled with ankle deep blood on this occasion. The night, called Kalaratri – literally the dark night – commemorates the slaying of the demon Raktabeez, capable of renewing itself through its blood, by Maha Gauri, one manifestation of the Goddess Durga. Sacrifice continues throughout the night at the temple of Taleju, within Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Even among Nepalis, Newars do not offer sacrifices to their deities on this day, which they do only the following day. To them, the night of Maha Ashtami means something very special, known as Kuchhi Bhwoye (a ritual family dinner).
