Dr. Yogendra Man Shakya

Hotel Metropolitan Kantipur has been in operation under the management of Dr. Yogendra Man Shakya and his family including a deaf member, Devendra Shakya, for over 18 years. Besides practising and teaching General Practice & Emergency as an Associate Professor, he provides medical care to the hotel's guests as its in-house doctor.

Dr. Shakya possesses a wide range of interests including metal crafts designing, cultural exchange, social activities and short trekking. He has been an active member of several academic and non-academic institutions like the Rotary Club of Thamel.

The entire family is committed to ensure that their guests feel at home and get the kind of care they deserve. Many elective medical students have stayed here for 2-4 months owing to the friendly environment and good service.

Caring for destination
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Staying with the Shakyas will give you a first hand experience of what an amazing sense of their responsibility they have towards society and their local community. This is a place that is definitely doing their bit to help the community around them, and ensuring that visitors coming here can help support these projects.

Some of the ways you can see them helping their community includes helping needy deaf people earn a living through purchasing locally made handicrafts as the main elements of interior decoration of the hotel.

As devout Buddhists, they regularly invite monks and nuns to visit, providing offerings of rice and meals. Last, and certainly not least, they also help the local village of 3,000 people through providing free medicines.

Be sure to speak to your host, Dr. Shakya, who has regularly volunteered for these free clinics, to learn more about the kinds of activities they are part of, and how tourists can help further.
