Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
At Dhulikhel Mountain Resort (DMR), priority is given to local produce and manpower. It provides training to the villagers so that they can build their careers in tourism, hospitality and related sectors. Such trainings also cover organic farming and environmentally sustainable tourism practices.
About 90% of the employees at DMR are from the villages around the resort and are working at different levels, including management positions. They are all given a fair and equal wage regardless of their ethnic background or sex and hence are proud to be working at a place where there is absolutely no discrimination among the employees. It also extends its support to its retired staff and their families.
Conservation of cultural heritage is one of DMR's underlying concepts and is implemented from its very foundations. All of the rooms use traditional, locally produced furnishings and decoration and our entire resort is built using local materials and reflects the style of the surrounding villages.
You can learn about Nepal's culture in general and that of Dhulikhel in detail by taking a guided tour/hike organised by DMR regularly. Your guide will tell you about the local culture and environment and also about the areas to avoid. Besides, you will also find a document in your room folder with details on how, as a tourist, you should respect the local communities and their customs. For example, photography, dress, temple etiquette etc.
On the environmental front, DMR has policies for water conservation and waste management. To minimise misuse of water, improved flush systems are used in the toilets. Signage is used in rooms to encourage guests to use less water and ensure that taps are properly turned off after use. Biodegradable kitchen waste and roof straws are made into compost. Environmental awareness and clean up campaigns are regularly held, in which you too can volunteer.
